The Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent was founded by Josiah Spode in 1770. The manager of Turner and Banks, Spode took over the factory upon the death of the owner. Spode began producing earthenware at the factory, building a successful business. Spode died in 1797, but left the business to his son, Josiah Spode. Josiah Spode III took the business over from his father, and ran it until his death in 1829. In 1833, a partner of Josiah Spode III, William Taylor Copeland, bought the company. Entering into a partnership with Thomas Garrett, the firm became Copeland & Garrett until 1847. Although the name changed, the high quality of the product did not, as the Spode factory held royal warrants since 1806. The company was sold to the Carborundum Company in 1966, and in honor of the company's 200th anniversary, the name was changed back to Spode. In 1976, Spode joined the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company, forming Royal Worcester Spode. China Lane often carries stock on many different Spode patterns, including:
