Franciscan Ceramics was a highly influential American pottery brand known for its beautifully crafted dinnerware, produced by Gladding, McBean & Co. in California. Established in 1934 during the Great Depression, the brand initially focused on earthenware and art pottery before gaining widespread popularity with its Franciscan dinnerware line. In 1941, it introduced Franciscan Desert Rose (USA), which became one of American history's best-selling dinnerware patterns. Other popular patterns include Franciscan Apple and Starburst. The company later expanded into fine china and stoneware, maintaining a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. In the 1970s, Franciscan production moved to England under Wedgwood's ownership. While the original California manufacturing ceased, its legacy remains strong among collectors and vintage tableware enthusiasts.
