Flora Danica
Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica – Hand-Painted Botanical Porcelain
Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica is the pinnacle of Danish porcelain: museum-level, hand-painted botanicals inspired by the 18th-century Flora Danica atlas. Each piece features a unique plant rendered in lifelike color, often titled with its Latin species name on the reverse, and finished with sculpted rims, pierced (reticulated) borders, and rich gilding. Flora Danica turns a table into a botanical garden.
Commissioned by the Danish court in the late 1700s and intended as a diplomatic gift, Flora Danica has been produced in limited quantities by Royal Copenhagen ever since. Master painters reinterpret illustrations from the original botanical plates, so no two pieces are exactly alike—one reason collectors worldwide prize the pattern.
What Makes Flora Danica Special
- One-of-a-kind motifs: Each item is hand-painted with a different plant—berries, blooms, leaves—often labeled in Latin underneath.
- Signature borders: Sculpted scallops, pierced/reticulated rims, beading, and generous gold trim elevate the artwork.
- Craftsmanship: Every brushstroke is applied by a trained painter; many pieces take days to complete.
- Versatility: Works as heirloom display, presentation service, or a showstopping accent mixed with Blue Fluted and other Royal Copenhagen lines.
Care & Display
Because Flora Danica uses polychrome painting and gilding, hand-wash with mild detergent and avoid the dishwasher and microwave. Use felt liners when stacking and plate stands or cabinet rails for display to protect the rims.
